Octopus (Collection) metal sculpture by Alan Williams

About the work

Octopuses have become one of Alan Williams’s signature subjects. There are repeated compositional ideas across the collection, but every sculpture is unique because the reclaimed materials, scale and arrangement vary from piece to piece.

Scale is normally determined by the client’s budget and the space in which the work will live. Pieces can be made in landscape or portrait orientation. The large work Lilleth II was exhibited at the Flux exhibition in Marylebone, London, in 2025.

Materials and construction

Typical components include car clutches, forged threaded bar, gas pipes, motorbike and bicycle chain, sprockets, gears and other mechanical salvage. Larger versions can incorporate car wheel rims, and some works have included aircraft turbine parts.

Works can be galvanised and painted where exterior or bathroom display requires weather and moisture protection.
