About the work
Green Man contrasts an ancient earth spirit of the forest with tools, machines and mechanisms. The hard shapes and edges of manufactured objects have been softened by fire, heat and manipulation into a more flowing, natural-looking state.
The work also explores the relationship between manufacture, industry and the natural world. Alan originally called the piece Grey Man because of the materials used, but Green Man is now the preferred title.
Materials and construction
Made from car clutches, retired tools, mechanical and agricultural salvage, forged threaded bar, bicycle and motorbike sprockets, chain and gears.
