About the work

With Chinese Dragon, Alan wanted to create the flowing fronds and tendrils associated with Chinese dragon imagery while still allowing the identity of the reclaimed objects to remain visible within the finished form.

The one-off sculpture was created in 2018 and exhibited at the Souq Waqif Art Foundation as part of the Scrap Art Exhibition in 2019. It is now privately owned in Qatar.

Materials and construction

The sculpture is constructed from car clutches, retired tools, forged threaded bar, metal-cutting discs, mechanical salvage, motorbike sprockets and chain.

Forging hardened steel components into flowing, fluid forms was central to the construction. The sculpture is designed for interior display and is protected with clear-coat lacquer.
