Sea Life Sculpture by Alan Williams

Sea life has given Alan Williams some of the most varied forms in his work, from octopuses, seahorses and koi to angler fish, marlin and other marine creatures.

Marine subjects bring particular challenges. An octopus spreads through space in several directions, a seahorse depends on its curled profile, while a marlin is carried by its long line and sense of forward movement.

The collection below brings together completed sea life works and commissions, with individual project pages recording the materials, dimensions and story behind each piece.

The collection includes fish, octopuses, seahorses and other aquatic forms, ranging from smaller wall-mounted and freestanding works to large-scale sculpture. Each piece develops around the anatomy and movement of its subject rather than a single repeated construction method.

Movement and flow

Marine creatures rarely depend on a simple outline. Tentacles, fins, long bodies and curved spines can move through space in very different ways.

For Leafy Sea Dragon, Alan combined typewriter parts, bicycle gears, motorbike sprockets, retired tools, forged steel and copper sheet. The contrast between the steel and copper helped carry the flowing form and colour of the creature through the finished sculpture.
