About the work

Capturing the character of an animal is important in Alan Williams’s work. With Triggerfish, he was drawn particularly to the lips and eyes of the fish and the almost comical expression created by those features.

The 2026 sculpture was made as a speculative one-off and is now privately owned in the USA.

Materials and construction

The face is forged from sheet steel and incorporates a bicycle derailleur. Typewriter parts, car clutches and a bicycle brake disc form the body, while sheet copper and forged steel rods create the tail and fins.

Forging the shape of the head and body, together with the aged paint effect, were key parts of the making process. The sculpture is intended for indoor display.
