About the work

Little Nippers began as a playful idea: a small limited run of aggressive carnivorous fish translated into compact reclaimed-metal sculptures.

The 2026 Piranhas are a limited edition of four. Alan reports that one remains available.

Materials and construction

The eye combines a forklift drive-chain link, forged threaded bar and ball bearings. Bicycle gears and derailleurs form the body, handsaw blades become the teeth, and bicycle gears and brake discs create the fins and tail. A car gearbox cog forms the base.

Working at this smaller three-dimensional scale required the construction welds to be concealed within a very tight space. Alan deliberately relied heavily on salvaged bicycle components for their clean, detailed forms. The pieces are finished with clear-coat lacquer.
