About the work

The breadth and diversity of marine life is an enduring source of inspiration for Alan Williams. With Scorpionfish, the forms and details of the fish are reinterpreted through salvaged materials, allowing particular features to be emphasised through the character of the objects used.

The 2026 sculpture was made speculatively and is now privately owned in Alaska. The design has been templated, so further individually made versions can be commissioned.

Materials and construction

The mouth combines forged reinforcing bar, cutlery and a motorbike sprocket. Spoons, threaded bar and a bicycle cog form the eye, while the body uses bicycle gears and brake discs, typewriter parts, tile-cutting discs, trampoline springs and a car clutch. The tail and fins are made from forged threaded bar and copper sheet.

Selecting and forging the salvaged components for the face and body was central to the construction. The copper was plasma cut, pierced and formed before assembly. The finished sculpture is protected with clear-coat lacquer.
