Alan has made around 20 variations of the Hippocampus composition. Each follows a broadly similar scale and arrangement, but the use of reclaimed components makes every piece unique.
The 70 × 26 × 8 cm format works particularly well with the curved forms available in the salvaged material. New seahorses can still be commissioned.
Made from salvaged typewriters, car clutches, forged threaded bar, found items, ball bearings, bicycle and motorbike gears and chain.
The arms of typewriter letter keys are repeated to create a ribcage-like structure, giving the seahorses a clockwork character while preserving their natural curves and delicacy.
