Bird Sculptures by Alan Williams

Bird sculptures are frequent subjects in Alan Williams’s extensive body of work. Subjects include intricate studies of ravens, eagles and herons to more abstract work such as Future Rembrance commissioned by the International Council on Mining and Metals.

Birds offer many possibilities for sculpture, from the quiet intensity of a perched owl to the power and movement of wings in flight. Larger public work has brought scale and engineering into the same process.

The collection below brings together completed bird works and commissions, with individual project pages recording the materials, dimensions and story behind each piece.

These works range from smaller individual birds to larger commissions and public sculpture. The collection includes owls, ravens, eagles, herons, flamingos, ospreys and other birds, each approached through its own posture, movement and structure.

Character, expression and meaning

Alan’s bird work ranges from the still, watchful presence of Night Watchman Eagle Owl and Shear Sight Raven to the more open forms of eagles and other birds of prey. Expression, silhouette and the way the bird occupies space are as important as the individual details.

Time Migration, a 2.2-metre Greenfinch is work of a much larger scale. It tells the story of Kuwait’s past and present through its wings which weave together references to historic and contemporary Kuwaiti architecture: one drawing on historic architecture, the other on the changing shape of the city.
