Dining Out (Eagle) metal sculpture by Alan Williams

About the work

Dining Out captures an eagle at the instant before take-off, poised to launch an attack. Alan was drawn to the bird simply because it was an impressive subject to resolve sculpturally rather than because of a particular client or location.

The pose also reflects his preference for asymmetry: forms can sit off-centre while remaining visually balanced. As Alan describes it, the aim is to capture a moment — or the anticipation of one about to happen — so that the atmosphere feels larger than the work itself.

Materials and construction

Made from mechanical salvage, forged threaded bar, cutlery, bicycle and motorbike gears and chain. The life-sized bird sits on a forged steel branch attached to a recycled 5 ft sea-defence post sourced from The Wood Recycling Project in Brighton.

Although mounted on a sea-defence post, this is an interior sculpture. It is protected with clear-coat lacquer.
