Spirit of the Forest is a life-sized stag bust with rising antlers. Alan’s approach to animal portraiture in reclaimed metal is not simply anatomical: he wants the making process to honour the character or ‘spirit’ of the animal and to communicate that connection to the viewer.
Made from mechanical salvage, retired tools, car clutches, bicycle and motorbike parts and gears. The complete work is galvanised by zinc dipping and is suitable for indoor or outdoor display.
The bust is built in four sections. The antlers slot into the top of the head and are held by gravity; the head locks onto a hanging bracket fixed to a trophy plate; and the trophy plate attaches to the wall through a multi-point backing plate. A 2 m vertical stand is also supplied for exhibition use.
