Django (Skip Rhino) metal sculpture by Alan Williams

About the work

Django transforms a used skip into a rhinoceros while deliberately retaining the skip’s bolts, hinges, layers of paint, scratches and dents. Those marks preserve the material’s previous life and are central to the idea of endurance, transformation and unexpected beauty.

The work was made in 2012 for an exhibition at Worthing Museum & Art Gallery. Rabbit Skips donated the original skip in return for promotion connected with the exhibition. Django is now owned by The Sculpture Park in Churt, where it remains on display and is listed for sale.

Materials and construction

The original skip remains visibly present in the sculpture. Some of its structural steel box-section had to be rebuilt to create the rhino’s form.

Django is suitable for outdoor display without additional protection for many years, although the work may eventually require refurbishment as it ages.
