Ignis Avem (Phoenix) metal sculpture by Alan Williams

About the work

Ignis Avem draws on the phoenix as a symbol of change, rebirth and regeneration. The client specifically asked for a sense of visual movement as the phoenix rises, which became the central compositional idea.

The piece was commissioned in late 2018 and completed in early 2019 for a private interior setting.

Materials and construction

The wings and neck are made from cutlery, the body from bicycle gears and ribbed copper tube, and the talons from spanners. Motorbike wheel rims and bicycle gears form the tail feathers.

The reclaimed components were heated, forged and sculpturally manipulated. A clear-coat lacquer gives the surface protection and a satin sheen.
