About the work

Alan used a combination of forged salvaged steel and copper to capture the flowing form and contrasting colour of the Leafy Sea Dragon. The materials allow the delicate, unusual shapes of the animal to be reinterpreted while remaining recognisably rooted in reclaimed mechanical objects.

Two versions of the design have been made. The work is sold but can be recommissioned, and the design was exhibited at the Flux exhibition in Marylebone, London, in 2025.

Materials and construction

The sculpture combines typewriter parts, bicycle gears, motorbike sprockets, domestic gas pipe, retired tools, forged threaded bar, nuts, bolts, ball bearings and copper sheet.

Forging the salvaged steel and shaping the copper were central to creating the flow and contrast of the composition. The piece is intended for interior display and hangs from a fixing point on the reverse.
