Mythical Creature Sculpture by Alan Williams

Mythical creatures give Alan Williams scope to combine his interest in organic forms and anatomy with the fantastical and surreal. His dragons, phoenixes, Kraken and other imagined creatures draw on familiar animal features, exaggerated and reinterpreted to create beings with a presence of their own.

Despite their fantastical nature, each creature needs to feel convincing. The balance of the body, the sweep of the wings and the expression of the face bring these imaginary creatures to life.

The collection includes dragons, phoenixes and other imagined forms, from wall-mounted work to freestanding and outdoor sculpture. Some draw on established mythology, while others combine familiar creatures and invented anatomy.

Fantastical creatures come to life

An imagined creature does not come with one correct anatomy, but it still needs a clear internal logic.

Alan can borrow from birds, reptiles, mammals and mechanical forms, then adjust proportion, posture and silhouette until the creature feels believable on its own terms. Ignis Avem was commissioned with a particular sense of movement in mind: the phoenix rising, with the wings and tail carrying much of that upward motion.
