Kraken (Collection) metal sculpture by Alan Williams

About the work

Three Kraken sculptures were commissioned as part of the same series. The works draw on the enduring mythology of a giant sea creature while using an octopus-like form as the sculptural starting point.

The individual works are Drama on the High Seas (2019, H 110 × W 75 × D 8 cm), The Battle Is Lost (2018, H 90 × W 300 × D 14 cm) and Threat from Below (2019, H 120 × W 60 × D 8 cm). All were made for private interior settings.

Materials and construction

Typical materials include found and forged sheet steel, retired tools, bearing casings, threaded bar, car clutches, motorbike wheel rims, gas pipes, chain, gears and brake discs.

The Battle Is Lost uses substantially heavier components, including extensive motorbike chain and brake discs. Integrated fixing points allow it to be bolted to the wall; installation required three people.
