Bug Handrail architectural metalwork by Alan Williams

About the work

Created for a garden celebrating the client’s love of nature and insects, this bespoke handrail combines function with a sculptural approach to garden design.

An optical element is built into the design, with the forged flat bars appearing to change from thin to thick as you move around it, creating a subtle sense of movement.

Created in conjunction with the garden landscape design by Carol Whitehead, the garden went on to receive a Silver Gilt APL Award.

Materials and construction

Hand forged throughout, the handrail incorporates forged rivet details across the handrail and supports. The insects are created from retired tools, motorbike sprockets and chain, car clutches and mechanical salvage.

The handrail was galvanised for long-lasting protection outdoors.
