Animal Sculpture by Alan Williams

Foxes, deer, leopards, rhinos and sloths are built from reclaimed tools, mechanical components, forged steel and other salvaged materials.

Each subject brings a different challenge. Stance, expression, movement, scale and the setting in which a sculpture will be seen can all influence the way the work develops.

The collection below brings together completed animal works and commissions, with individual project pages recording the materials, dimensions and story behind each piece.

These works range from smaller freestanding pieces to wall-mounted and large outdoor sculptures. Some were created for private collectors, while others were developed for exhibitions, businesses or particular architectural settings.

Character and movement

The recognisable character of an animal often comes from small decisions rather than from copying every anatomical detail.

Urban Fox grew from a pose Alan had drawn for years. For Hangout, he remade the sloth’s face four times before the sleepy expression worked.

Soft Creeping presented a different problem: the leopard had to appear three-dimensional while projecting no more than 10 cm from a hallway wall.
