About Moth

Moth is an original moth sculpture created by Alan Williams in 2025 from bicycle parts, typewriter components, forged threaded bar and other reclaimed mechanical pieces. Wall-mounted within a wooden frame, the work combines the small, intricate shapes of an insect with recognisable fragments of machinery.

Alan has long been interested in moths and insects, particularly their segmented anatomy and delicate structures. Typewriters provide some of the smaller components he needs for this kind of detailed work. Rather than hiding their previous function entirely, he uses the shapes of the parts to help develop the character of the moth.

This piece was created independently, not for a commission. It measures 37 cm high by 25 cm wide and is currently available for £480.

Mechanical salvage and intricate details

The moth is assembled from bicycle components, mechanical salvage, forged threaded bar and parts from old typewriters. Alan uses typewriter keys to form the legs, working with the scale and geometry of each piece to build the insect’s smaller details.

The frame is made from reclaimed jarrah, an Australian hardwood that Alan salvaged from Brighton’s historic West Pier. The timber brings its own previous life to the work, while its grain and weathered character provide a contrast with the tightly arranged metal components.

For Alan, making an insect on this scale is an opportunity to work carefully with pieces that would be too small for many of his larger animal sculptures. The materials help determine how the body, legs and finer features come together.

Wall-mounted metal insect sculpture

Moth measures 37 cm high × 25 cm wide × 4 cm deep, including its reclaimed jarrah frame. It is designed as a wall-mounted artwork rather than a freestanding sculpture.

Its framed format makes the salvaged materials visible against a textured background, with the moth’s finer mechanical construction best appreciated at close range. Anyone considering purchase should confirm the wall fixings, placement and delivery arrangements with Alan; these details have not been specified as included.
