Figurative Sculpture by Alan Williams

Alan’s figurative sculpture features human forms and masks, from self-initiated pieces to private, commercial and memorial commissions.

Each offers a different way to explore human character through posture, gesture and expression, from the stance of a full figure to the stylised features of a mask.

The collection includes freestanding figures, wall-mounted work and commissions that use the human form, face or anatomy in different ways.

Figurative work

Working with the human form changes how reclaimed components have to be read. A tool or gear may suggest a joint, a fold of clothing or part of a face, but the finished sculpture still has to carry the posture, expression or likeness of its subject.

In Boy with Chicken, posture and interaction carry the relationship between the figures. Cretan Bull Jumper sets the weight of the bull against a much lighter acrobat forged from a single pair of pliers. The Lemmy Kilmister Memorial Bust required closer control again: small changes to the brow, jaw, cheek or mouth could alter the likeness considerably.
