Cretan Bull Jumper was commissioned in 2015 to commemorate a 70th birthday; the recipient’s star sign was Taurus. Rather than copying a specific Minoan fresco, Alan developed his own composition around the raw energy of a bucking bull and the contrasting elegance of the acrobat.
The acrobat is removable and can be positioned in different locations on the bull, adding another layer of movement to the composition.
Made from mechanical salvage, retired tools, car clutches and motorbike and bicycle components. The acrobat was forged from a single pair of pliers.
Astrological symbols found on cutlery handles reinforce the Taurus theme, and tiny pocket-watch clock faces are set into the sculpture. The work is fixed to a base for stability.
