Samurai Mask metal sculpture by Alan Williams

About the work

Alan’s fascination with masks goes back to childhood and teenage experiments making plaster-bandage masks over friends’ faces. Samurai Mask was a long-held subject he wanted to explore and was completed in 2020 as a one-off speculative passion project.

The design is Alan’s own interpretation, drawing direct inspiration from a range of historical samurai masks rather than copying a single example.

Materials and construction

Made from found objects, stainless-steel sheet, agricultural chain, car clutches, bicycle and motorbike chain, gears and brake discs.

Heat from the forge was central to creating the colouration of the surface, which was then protected with clear-coat lacquer. A slotted plate on the reverse allows the mask to slide down securely onto a suitable wall fixing.
