The story behind Giant Pacific Octopus

Giant Pacific Octopus is an original piece of octopus metal wall art by British sculptor Alan Williams. Created in 2025, the sculpture is built from hand-forged car clutches, motorbike chains and sprockets, bicycle gears, threaded steel and other reclaimed mechanical components. Measuring 104 cm across, it is designed for wall display and is currently available for £7,000.

Alan has always enjoyed turning rigid metal components into the curling, organic forms of octopuses. Rather than deciding every detail in advance, he allows the salvaged shapes to influence the sculpture as it develops. That dialogue between material and subject helps him create tentacles that appear to flow, while the history of the industrial parts remains visible.

He made this particular octopus independently in 2025, rather than for a commission. It brings together the qualities he finds most absorbing about the subject: the freedom to forge, manipulate and connect complicated forms into a single recognisable creature.

Forged mechanical salvage and construction

Alan constructed the sculpture using forged car clutches, motorcycle sprockets and chains, bicycle gears and other components, lengths of forged threaded bar, retired tools and bearing casings. He shaped and manipulated the individual metal parts by hand to achieve the octopus’s curved body and tentacles.

The work combines the recognisable forms of its mechanical origins with a fluid sculptural outline. Repeated rings, coils, teeth and curved steel lengths supply texture and detail, while the overall form remains unmistakably an octopus. The construction is not a casting or a lightweight printed wall decoration; it is a one-off forged metal sculpture.

Wall-mounted octopus metal wall art

Giant Pacific Octopus measures 74 cm high × 104 cm wide × 10 cm deep and is intended to be wall-mounted. Its breadth and detailed construction make it a substantial piece of original metal wall art rather than a small decorative hanging.

The sculpture’s weight, fixing system and suitable wall construction have not yet been confirmed. Prospective buyers should discuss safe mounting, access, delivery and any installation arrangements directly with Alan before purchase. These services are not stated as included in the £7,000 price.
