About the work

This 2026 Angelfish was developed as a speculative work and can be recreated as a new version. Alan approached the fish through a biomechanical lens, contrasting the natural perfection of its form with reclaimed mechanical components.

The surface treatment was intended to suggest the clean appearance of white porcelain or enamel while retaining a tarnished, aged quality that strengthens the mechanical character of the sculpture.

Materials and construction

The face is forged from sheet steel. The body combines typewriter parts, components from a mechanical accounting machine, bicycle gears and brake discs. Sheet copper and 1.5 mm steel wire form the tail and fins.

Forging, surface patination and the aged paint effect are important to the final appearance. The wall-mounted sculpture is finished with clear-coat lacquer.
