Nidhogg (Dragon) metal sculpture by Alan Williams

About the work

In Norse mythology, Nidhogg is the dragon associated with destruction and decay at the roots of Yggdrasil. Alan created this sculpture for a sculpture trail at Borde Hill Gardens in 2014; it was conceived independently from his later Yggdrasil commission.

The dragon is mounted on one of the sea-defence posts Alan keeps for larger sculptural work. The post is secured into a subterranean steel cross-frame for stability, and the completed work is now privately owned.

Materials and construction

The body, head, tail and legs are made from agricultural chain-link. Motorbike chain forms the toes, saw blades form the wings, and the claws and teeth are forged steel.

The work was hot-dip galvanised in zinc to give it long-term protection for permanent outdoor display.
