About the work

Gone Fishing focuses on the layered sculptural shapes of a heron’s feathers and the contrast between its apparently calm appearance and its behaviour as a formidable predator. Alan conceived the pose rather than copying a particular photograph, aiming to catch the bird moving stealthily towards a potential meal.

Materials and construction

Made from retired tools, cutlery, car clutches, forged steel, motorbike sprockets, chain and gears. Thick-handled cutlery creates much of the density and layering in the plumage.

The work was galvanised for outdoor use and then treated with diluted black cellulose paint to increase contrast across the reclaimed materials.
