About the work

Scorpius is one of two closely related scorpion sculptures. The 2026 version develops the facial detail further, while retaining Alan’s interest in the defensive, almost prehistoric appearance of the animal.

Every element was considered anatomically, but the face was the most difficult part to resolve. Using spoons for the legs produced the particular proportions and surface needed for a more realistic effect.

Materials and construction

The face uses spoons, clutch parts and threaded bar, with ring spanners and ball bearings for the eyes. The pincers combine forged differential pinion rods, bicycle gears and cutlery; the body uses salvaged conveyor chain and car clutches; the legs use spoons and forged 8 mm round bar; and pétanque balls form the tail.
