About the work

Bee is a one-off reclaimed-metal sculpture created by Alan Williams in 2019. The work combines detailed mechanical components with articulated wings that can be opened.

The sculpture was exhibited at the Souq Waqif Art Foundation as part of the Scrap Art Exhibition in 2019 and is now privately owned in Qatar.

Materials and construction

Bicycle gears, spoons and forged threaded bar form the head and eyes. Motorbike sprockets create the thorax, while horseshoes and bicycle gears make up the abdomen. The legs use forged threaded bar, spanners and bicycle chain; the wings combine steel rod and ring spanners, with flat bar forming the honeycomb element.

The wings are articulated and can be opened. Copper-powder embellishments and clear-coat lacquer complete the finish.
