About the work

Alan set out to make the Stag Beetle feel like an oversized piece of jewellery: densely detailed, highly embellished and designed to show the beauty that can be found in salvaged mechanical materials.

The one-off 2018 sculpture was later exhibited at the Souq Waqif Art Foundation as part of the Scrap Art Exhibition in 2019. It is now privately owned in Qatar.

Materials and construction

The head uses motorbike sprockets and bicycle gears. Car clutch casings, domestic gas pipes and motorbike sprockets form the pincers. The thorax combines forged threaded bar, bicycle gears, architectural components, forged pliers and found objects.

The abdomen contains forged pliers, car clutches, motorbike sprockets and chain, threaded bar, bicycle sprockets, brake discs and gears. The legs incorporate forged threaded bar and reinforcing bar, forged motorbike sprockets and chain links, car window levers and cutlery handles. The wing casings can be opened and closed to reveal further detail beneath. The interior artwork is protected with clear-coat lacquer.
