About the work
Grasshoppers have long fascinated Alan for their agility and apparently observant behaviour. For this 2015 sculpture he studied general local species, occasionally collecting one or two temporarily in the wild to understand their anatomy and movement before releasing them.
Materials and construction
The legs combine spanners, large scissors, retired tools and chainsaw chain. Saw blades and retired tools form the wings; clutch plates, casings and industrial pipe form the head; and the eyes combine kitchen sieve, sheet copper and forged round bar.
The work is freestanding without a separate base and is protected with clear-coat lacquer.
