Amber (Cat Dragon) metal sculpture by Alan Williams

About the work

Amber began with an unusually direct brief: ‘We like cats, and we like Dragons.’ Alan combined recognisable feline characteristics with dragon anatomy, developing the final sculpture after an initial sketch was approved and then being given freedom over the detailed design.

The title came from the client, who said ‘Amber’ as soon as they saw the finished work.

Materials and construction

The front legs are forged differential pinion rods made from 30 mm solid tool steel, giving the sculpture a low centre of gravity and a stable weighted base. The chest is made from forged and welded clutch plates, while the claws use spoons and ball bearings.

The cast amber glass eyes were made by Brighton Glass. The sculpture is fully three-dimensional and mounted on a 60 cm tall sea-defence post.
