Dragons (Collection) metal sculpture by Alan Williams

About the work

Dragons have been a recurring subject across Alan Williams’s work. He has made around 12 dragon sculptures over roughly 11 years, ranging from smaller interior pieces to large works designed for gardens and architectural settings.

The double-winged dragons form the repeatable collection; other named dragons — including Amber, Chinese Dragon, Glass Dragon, Nidhogg and Rumbunctious Dragon — are treated as separate works. Dragon commissions remain available and can be developed at different scales to suit a particular space or environment.

Nidhogg has the strongest documented exhibition history within this body of work, having been shown at Borde Hill Gardens in 2014.

Materials and construction

Typical materials include car clutches, motorbike brake discs, sprockets and chain, bicycle gears, retired tools and sheet copper. Smaller works are usually wall mounted, while larger dragon-themed pieces can be freestanding or integrated into a landscape or architectural setting.
