Fire Horse metal horse sculpture by Alan Williams, forged steel horse head outdoors

The story behind Fire Horse

Fire Horse is an original metal horse sculpture created by Alan Williams in 2026. The 140 cm-high work is a stylised horse’s head and neck, assembled from individually hand-forged steel panels. Alan made it independently, rather than for a commission, to explore a different approach to shaping metal.

Much of Alan’s sculpture begins with discarded mechanical parts. For Fire Horse, he wanted to move away from that familiar method and work with simplified forms instead. Each panel contributes to the outline and expression of the animal, without relying on the recognisable components of a machine.

The name comes from 2026 being the Year of the Fire Horse in the Chinese zodiac. The piece is currently available to purchase for £3,500.

Hand-forged steel and construction

The horse’s head and elongated neck are built from individually forged sheet steel panels. The panels are assembled into a simplified, angular form, allowing the character of the horse to emerge through their shapes and joins.

Pétanque balls form the eyes. The surface has a painted rust-effect patina, chosen to resemble naturally weathered steel; it should not be described as a naturally rusted or reclaimed-metal finish. The sculpture is supported by a steel cross-frame at its base.

A metal horse sculpture for the garden

Fire Horse stands 140 cm high, with a width of 40 cm and depth of 50 cm. It is freestanding and has a steel cross-frame designed to be buried beneath ground level. Concealing the base makes the horse’s head and neck appear to rise directly from the landscape.

The sculpture has a painted rust-effect finish. Buyers considering an outdoor position should discuss siting, anchoring, maintenance, transport and installation requirements with Alan before purchase. No installation or delivery service is represented as included in the price.
