Soft Creeping (Leopard) metal sculpture by Alan Williams

About the work

Soft Creeping was commissioned for the end of a hallway where the sculpture could project no more than 10 cm from the wall. That shallow profile made depth and foreshortening a central challenge.

Alan created the illusion of greater depth by carefully grading materials from larger to smaller forms. A tree-like backplate provides visual context for the descending leopard and also forms the structural mounting system.

Materials and construction

Made from bicycle gears, motorbike spokes, brake discs and forklift drive-chain links. Larger-to-smaller bicycle cogs and chain links were selected deliberately to strengthen the foreshortening effect.

The bespoke amber glass eyes were sourced from House of Marbles. The backplate fixes to the wall at multiple points, and the leopard hangs from it using a bespoke system designed to be straightforward for the client to mount.
